We just received this inquiry:
Is the Literary Legends gala a dinner or more of just a reading?
In case other Library patrons are wondering, we thought we would answer this question here on our website.
Literary Legends is a party in the Library. It moves around to different branches and takes place this year at the Bach Branch. Are you excited for wine, hors d’ourves, dancing, and great conversations with other lovers of literature, between the stacks in the Library at night?
Literary Legends is not a sit-down dinner. Heavy hors d’ourves are provided by our generous sponsors – New World Bistro Bar, The Fountain Restaurant, Anton’s Greek American Eatery, Saati’s Deli & Catering, and the culinary program of the Abrookin Career and Technical Center. While you won’t have an assigned seat at a table, you don’t need to plan to eat before the party. And visiting the buffet allows everyone to meet more people… and to look at more books! We do have some tables for those who would like to sit, and many high tables for you to set your drink down.
The Albany High Jazz Band will perform, and DJ Sean will spin dance tunes until the party ends at 9:30pm. If the music is too loud for you, there will be quiet areas in the children’s library and in the teen room. Weather permitting, the garden will be open and we will have an additional bar there.
The most important thing about Literary Legends is that it honors the accomplishments of local authors and publishers, and this year, we are honoring the writer Athena V. Lord. We’ll pause the music from 7:30 to 8:00pm for our awards ceremony. This year, Mayor Sheehan will also deliver a proclamation. Literary Legends is also the most important fundraiser of the year for the Albany Public Library, and we have a terrific silent auction with athletic tickets, gift certificates, signed books, and, this year, a valuable event package from Glennpeter Jewelers!
